2009 Tuvalu $1 Famous Battles in History: Thermopylae 480BC - 1 oz Fine Silver Coin

The Tuvalu 1 Oz. Silver 2009 Famous Battles in History - Thermopylae coin is a remarkable numismatic tribute to one of the most iconic battles in history, the Battle of Thermopylae. The Battle of Thermopylae took place in 480 BC during the Greco-Persian Wars. It was a heroic stand by a small Greek force, led by King Leonidas I of Sparta, against a massive Persian army commanded by King Xerxes I. The battle is renowned for the bravery and sacrifice of the Greek soldiers, who fought to the last man to defend their homeland against overwhelming odds. This coin series, "Famous Battles in History," commemorates such pivotal moments in world history, allowing collectors to connect with the past.

Design

  • The obverse of the coin features a dramatic depiction of the Battle of Thermopylae. The Greek phalanx, led by King Leonidas, stands resolute against the Persian onslaught. The attention to detail in the design captures the intensity of the battle, with warriors in armor and shields forming an impenetrable line. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include "FAMOUS BATTLES IN HISTORY," "THERMOPYLAE," "1 OZ 999 SILVER," and the year of issue, "2009," signifying the coin's theme, weight, purity, and year of minting.
  • On the reverse side, the coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, a common feature on coins from Tuvalu, the issuing country. Surrounding Her Majesty's likeness are inscriptions that denote her name, "ELIZABETH II," and the coin's denomination of "ONE DOLLAR." This side of the coin serves to authenticate its legal tender status.
