A limited opportunity to get the 2023 Collector’s Edition non-circulation $1 loonie coins.
As we focus our attention on commemorating the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (1952-2022), the Mint will not be issuing any 2023-dated Canadian circulation coins featuring both the traditional reverse designs and an obverse featuring Queen Elizabeth II. Instead, we are offering a collector’s edition of these annual issues that have been struck in limited numbers. These are non-circulation coins, meaning they are legal tender but not intended for general circulation.
Features
Specially for collectors. An exceptional issue, these coins are exclusively available as part of the Annual Gift Sets, the Collector’s Edition Coin Set, and the Special Wrap Roll Set. Each coin is not intended for general circulation.
Design
The obverse design features a bust image of Queen Elizabeth II and the phrase "ELIZABETH II D.G. REGINA". The official Royal Canadian Mint privy mark resides just below the bust. In June 2003, the Government of Canada announced that an updated effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II would appear on all Canadian circulation coins in honour of the 50th anniversary of the Queen's coronation. This design is the work of artist Susanna Blunt, whose prior experience with Buckingham Palace included painting a portrait of Prince Edward. The obverse also bears a special marking that includes four pearls symbolizing the four effigies that have graced Canadian coins and the double date of her reign.
The reverse, designed by Robert R. Carmichael, features a Canadian Loon on water with an island in the background. On the outer periphery are the words "CANADA" and "DOLLAR". Just below the loon is the year of issue.
