Fuerstenberg is known for his “magic realism.” His style is anchored in reality, but he adds mystery or fantastical elements to tell a story or reveal a deeper meaning. This is Fuerstenberg’s first coin with the Mint. He interpreted the Arctic fox as an integral part of the landscape, not just one of its inhabitants.

Design

Designed by Canadian artist Jayson Fuerstenberg, your coin features an Arctic fox poised on a background of gold-plated snow. The fox’s compact ears and muzzle are clearly distinguishable in its ¾ profile. Its distinctive long tail warms its legs. An Arctic landscape is engraved within the fox’s silhouette. It features snow-covered tundra, mountains, and a North American brown lemming, the fox’s preferred prey. “CANADA 2019 50 DOLLARS” appears to the right of the fox’s back. Its engraving follows the contours of the drifting snow. On the obverse, the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt with “ELIZABETH II D.G. REGINA” is engraved along the outer edge of your coin.
