Design

The portrait, created by Canadian artist Bonnie Ross, depicts Elizabeth II at the age of her sapphire jubilee. The design echoes the style of The Queen’s effigies that have appeared on coins—the face as the central element, shown from the neck up, facing right. The Queen is portrayed with a three-quarter view instead of the traditional side profile, and is flanked by two rows of maple leaves, alluding to her connection to Canada.
