Today, the Canadian Football League† annually hosts the Grey Cup® Championship, which is followed and celebrated by millions each year. The 2012 edition of this world-class sporting event represents the 100th time that Canadian football teams have vied for Lord Earl Grey’s coveted trophy since it was first presented by the famed Governor-General in 1909.

Design

The Coin:
This painted cupronickel coin has a diameter of 35 millimetres. The reverse design by Canadian artist Filip Mroz highlights several important elements for all eight Canadian Football League teams, including their team logo, team colours, and past Grey Cup Championship wins. In the foreground, half of the polished field is filled with a side- view of a football, rendered in exceptional textural detail with its laces crossing the centre of the image. The football features a full-colour green, silver, black, and white Saskatchewan Roughriders logo. In the background rises the Grey Cup. The reverse highlights the Roughriders’ past Grey Cup championship wins with the bilingual green text 'THREE-TIME CHAMPIONS/TROIS FOIS CHAMPIONS.' The reverse also features the engraved text 'CANADA,' the year '2012' to commemorate the 100th Grey Cup Game, and the face value of '25 CENTS.' The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

The Stamps:
The two Canada Post commemorative stamps each have a PERMANENT TM domestic rate.

The Grey Cup Stamp – With its exciting history both during the game and the annual festivities that surround the Grey Cup, this commemorative stamp salutes a favourite Canadian past-time that has become deeply entrenched into the very culture of Canada. The Grey Cup is recognised as one of the oldest Canadian Iconic Trophies that brings true pride to its winners and all Canadians alike.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders Stamp – This commemorative stamp captures one the team’s greatest moments which is the 77th Grey Cup when Saskatchewan prevailed over Hamilton in what is considered to be one the most exciting Canadian football games ever played. A 40-40 tied game, seconds to go, and a winning field goal that delivered the Riders the Grey Cup win.

Packaging

The coin and stamps are encapsulated and presented in a colourful folder, featuring a special area to collect the 100th Playing of the Grey Cup commemorative circulation $1 coin, all protected by a plastic sleeve.
