A March Into History

In July 1874, more than 250 scarlet-clad policemen set out on horseback from Fort Dufferin, MB to ride 800 miles into the west. With them, they brought law and order.

The journey took months. As the procession of mounted men, wagons and cattle crept westward over the prairies, the dust it stirred up could be seen for miles - a sight marking the end of a reign of frontier terror. Whiskey traders and hooligans ran for their horses as "Mounties" rode into trading posts and encampments throughout the territory.

These were no ordinary policmen, for the NWMP were also soldiers and magistrates. A boy who saw one of them arriving in an outpost remembered for the rest of his life, "the instant, compelling impressiveness of this man in the scarlet tunic.."

By 1904, the North-West Mounted Police had earned the title 'Royal' to add to an already proud name. In 1920, it was transformed into Canada's national police force under yet another famous name - the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Today, the historic force is recognized worldwide as a symbol of integrity and professionalism.

Design

To mark the 125th Anniversary, the dollar coin and collector pin depict a mounted police officer in a 1900s uniform riding a horse.
