1954 SHORT WATER LINE (SWL) Canada $1 Voyageur Silver Dollar Coin ICCS Graded MS-63

One Dollar - 80% Silver - Elizabeth II (1954 - 1964)

The portrait model of the new Queen Elizabeth coinages was prepared in England by a sculptress, Mary Gillick.

1954 Canadian Silver Dollar Varieties

First runs of the 1953 $1 denomination had a relief set too high with the result that the portion containing two lines on the shoulder (representing a fold in the Queen's gown) did not strike up well on the coins. These coins would come to be known as NSF/No Shoulder Fold. Later in 1953, Royal Canadian Mint authorities decided to correct the defects by strengthening the shoulder and hair detail. This modified obverse was introduced before the end of the year and became the standard or SF/Shoulder Fold issue.

Obverse

Coin depicts the laureate design of Queen Elizabeth II with the Latin inscription:
ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA: meaning "Elizabeth II, by the grace of God, the Queen."

Reverse

Features a modern design by sculptor Emanuel Hahn, showing an Indian and a voyageur, a travelling agent for a fur company, paddling a canoe by an islet on which therer are two wind-swept trees. In the canoe are bundles of goods; the bundle at the right has HB, representing the Hudson's Bay Company. The vertical lines in the background represet the northern lights.
