1949 Canada $1 Newfoundland Commemorative Silver Dollar Coin ICCS Graded MS-65

One Dollar Silver - George VI (1949 - 1952)

On December 31, 1949 Newfoundland became a province of the Dominion of Canada. To mark this historic event a special reverse appeared on the dollar for that year. The Matthew, the ship in which John Cabot is thought to have discovered Newfoundland, is depicted. Designer Thomas Shingles engraved the master matrix entirely by hand.

Obverse

GEORGIVS VI DEI GRATIA REX meaning "George VI, by the grace of God, the King"

Reverse

Features the ship, Matthew, sailed by John Cabot during the discovery of Newfoundland. Below is the Latin inscription:
FLOREAT TERRA NOVA meaning "May the new found land flourish."
