2001-P Canadian 10-Cent Year of Volunteers/Marching Mothers Dime Coin (Brilliant Uncirculated)

From a community, to a nation, to the world

Fifty years ago, mothers from Hamilton, ON collected dimes to find a cure for polio. Their efforts made a direct contribution to the discovery of the vaccine. Their work continued, responding to new areas of need and expanding into other communities. These "Marching Mothers" were a significant force in the lives of Canadians and exemplify the spirit of volunteerism.

Participating in the art of kindness

Think of your friends, relatives, co-workers and neighbors. You probably know some very special people who quietly give a little of their time and energy to help others. They coach the pee-wee hockey team, lead the effort to clean up the park, organize recycling drives to raise money for a worthy cause, bring meals to the disabled and elderly, or make a child's hospital stay just a little brighter. They ask for nothing in return.

Simply getting a smile and knowing they have helped is enough.

Design

The obverse design by Dora de Pedry-Hunt and Ago Aarand depicts the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in right profile, when she was 64 years old. It is surrounded with the inscription "ELIZABETH II D • G • REGINA".

This coin depicts a symbolic rendition of the marching mothers and the sun's rays, symbolizing the enlightening effect that volunteers have upon our communities. It is accompanied with the legend both in English and French "YEAR OF VOLUNTEERS • ANNÉE DES BÉNÉVOLES".
