50 Cents - George VI / Coat of Arms (1937 - 1952)
In keeping with a Government decision to modernize all coin reverses, a simplified Canadian Coat of Arms was chosen. The simplification involved omission of the crest, helmet and mantling, motto and floral emblems; in addition, no attempt was made to heraldically colur the shield and banners. The shield consists of the arms of England (three lions), Scotland (rearing lion), royalist France (Three fleurs-de-lis) and Ireland (a harp) and is surmounted by a stylized Imperial crown.
Obverse
Coin depicts the design of King George VI with the Latin inscription:
GEORGIVS VI D:G:REX ET IND:IMP: meaning "George VI, by the grace of God, King and Emperor of India"
Reverse
Features the modified Canadian Coat of Arms as described by the Royal proclamation of November 21, 1921.
