1942 TOMBAC Canadian 5-Cent Beaver Coin Roll (Circulated)

Large 5 Cents - George VI (1937 - 1942)

Both obverses (round and 12-sided issues) have a bare-headed portrait of the King. In keeping with the decision to modernize the new George VI reverses, the now-familiar beaver motif was chosen for the 5 cent coins (was at first considered for the 10 cents). Because nickel was needed for World War II, its use for coinage was suspended in late 1942. The substitute first used was a brass alloy commonly called "tombac." This metal quickly tarnishes to the brownish hue acquired by bronze, so these issues were made 12-sided to avoid confusion. Due to lack of time, both obverse and reverse were made without the conventional rim denticles.

Obverse

Coin depicts the design of King George VI with the Latin inscription:
GEORGIVS VI D:G:REX ET IND:IMP meaning "George V, by the grace of God, the King and Emperor of India."

Reverse

Features a beaver on a rock-studded mound of earth rising out of the water. At the left is a log which the beaver has been chewing.
