1940-C Newfoundland 5-Cent Piece Silver Coin ICCS Graded MS-64

5 Cents - George VI (1938 - 1947)

While considering the replacement of the large cent, the Newfoundland government also contemplated dropping its fish scale silver 5-cent piece in favour of a nickel coin similar to Canada's. At that time, because of a strong conservative element, it was decide to change only the cent.

"C" Mint Mark

During World War II, Newfoundland cents were coined at the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa rather than in England to avoid the risks of transatlantic shipping. The "C" mint mark is below the oval at the bottom on the reverse.

Obverse

Coin depicts the design of King George VI with the Latin inscription:
GEORGIVS VI DEI GRA:REX ET IND:IMP meaning "George VI, by the grace of God, the King and Emperor of India."

Reverse

Originally designed for the 1903 issue by G.W. DeSaulles, its one of the last coinage designs he did before his death.
