In 2010, the United States Mint began issuing 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites as part of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program.

Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge is host to hundreds of thousands of migrating ducks, geese, shorebirds and neo-tropical songbirds in their spring and fall migrations. Tired and hungry between Canada and the Gulf of Mexico, they seek shelter at Bombay Hook and feast on marsh grasses, fish and other important foods before continuing their flight. Bombay Hook’s 16,000 acres include freshwater pools, swamps, upland forests, agricultural fields and one of the largest unaltered tidal salt marshes in the Mid-Atlantic region. It was established as a national site in 1937.

Design

Obverse:
John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington (modified by William Cousins) is featured on the obverse. Also seen are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintmark.

Reverse:
For Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge quarters and five ounce silver coins, a great blue heron is shown in the foreground and a great egret appears in the background. They populate the refuge’s tidal salt marsh. Inscriptions encircle the design with BOMBAY HOOK, DELAWARE, 2015, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse was the work of AIP artist Joel Iskowitz. It will be sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill.
