In 2010, the United States Mint began issuing 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites as part of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program.
Blue Ridge Parkway is a scenic byway with natural attractions, a unit of the park system with numerous recreational opportunities and a cross-section of Appalachian mountain history. Stretching 469 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains through North Carolina and Virginia, it encompasses some of the oldest settlements of both pre-historic and early European settlement in the U.S. It was established as a national site in 1936.
Design
Obverse:
John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington (modified by William Cousins) is featured on the obverse. Also seen are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintmark.
Reverse:
Blue Ridge Parkway coins display a curved road hugging the side of a mountain as it enters a tunnel. The North Carolina state flower populates the foreground. Around the design are inscriptions of BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY, NORTH CAROLINA, 2015, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Designing the reverse was AIP artist Frank Morris with sculpting going to U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna.
