In 2010, the United States Mint began issuing 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites as part of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program.

The White Mountain National Forest quarter is the first of 2013 and the 16th overall in the America the Beautiful Quarters Program. White Mountain National Forest, located in both New Hampshire and Maine, provides unique and strikingly beautiful landscapes and is one of America’s most visited national forests for its wide array of recreational opportunities and rich natural resources. The White Mountain National Forest includes unique features such as Mt. Washington, the highest peak north of the Smokey Mountains and east of the Mississippi. It was first established as a national site on May 16, 1918 (40 Stat. 1779).

Design

Obverse:
John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington (modified by William Cousins) is featured on the obverse. Also seen are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintmark.

Reverse:
Depicted on the reverse is Mt. Chocorua framed by birch trees. Mt. Chocorua is the easternmost peak of the Sandwich Range. Surrounding inscriptions are WHITE MOUNTAIN, NEW HAMPSHIRE, 2013, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. This reverse design was created and sculpted by U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill.
