2012-P United States 25-Cent Denali/Alaska National Park Quarter Coin (Brilliant Uncirculated)
In 2010, the United States Mint began issuing 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites as part of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program.
The 2012 Denali America the Beautiful Quarter will mark the last of five 2012-dated strikes to appear as part of the US Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters® Program. Located on the reverse of the coin will be a design emblematic of Denali National Park found in the state of Alaska.
A total of fifty-six coins will be issued in the series before it is completed in 2021. One site of national interest was chosen from each state, the District of Columbia and the five US Territories to be included in the program.
Denali National Park began as a federal site as Mount McKinley National Monument in 1917. Some sixty years later the site was renamed to Denali to better reflect the wishes of local citizens. The part today encompasses an area of over 6 million acres.
Obverse design:
John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington (modified by William Cousins) is featured on the obverse. Also seen are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintmark.
Reverse design:
The fifth quarter of 2012 depicts a Dall sheep with Mount McKinley rising in the background. Inscriptions are DENALI, ALASKA, 2012 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse was designed by AIP Master Designer Susan Gamble and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Jim Licaretz.
