In 2010, the United States Mint began issuing 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites as part of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program.
The 2012 Hawaii Volcanoes America the Beautiful Quarter will be issued by the United States Mint in 2012. Showcased on the reverse of the coin will be a design emblematic of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park located in the state of Hawaii.
A total of fifty-six new quarters will be issued under the complete America the Beautiful Quarters Program. The strikes feature a release rate of five per year from the debut year of 2010 until the last strike is issued in 2021.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park was established on the Big Island of Hawaii in 1916. It encompasses an area around the Kīlauea volcano and the Mauna Loa volcano with a total of 505 square miles within its borders.
Design
Obverse:
John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington (modified by William Cousins) is featured on the obverse. Also seen are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintmark.
Reverse:
The reverse of the fourth quarter of 2012 depicts an eruption on the east rift of Kilauea Volcano. Inscriptions are HAWAI'I VOLCANOES, HAWAII, 2012 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. It was designed and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Charles L. Vickers.
