2012-D United States 25-Cent Acadia/Maine National Park Quarter Coin (Brilliant Uncirculated)
In 2010, the United States Mint began issuing 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites as part of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program.
The 2012 Acadia America the Beautiful Quarter contains a reverse design emblematic of Acadia National Park located in the state of Maine. This strike marks the third of five 2012-dated releases of the US Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters® Program as well as the thirteenth in the series overall.
Acadia National Park was created as Lafayette National Park in 1919. Ten years later it was renamed Acadia and today encompasses an area of over 45,000 acres.
Along with these quarters, the US Mint will also issue the Acadia ATB 5 Oz Silver Coins in 2012 to honor the national park. As implied by the name, these coins are struck from five ounces of silver. They also feature the same basic obverse and reverse imagery as shown on the associated quarter dollar.
Design
Obverse:
John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington (modified by William Cousins) is featured on the obverse. Also seen are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintmark.
Reverse:
The reverse of the third quarter of 2012 depicts a view of the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse and Acadia's rough coastline. Inscriptions are ACADIA, MAINE, 2012 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. The reverse was designed by AIP Associate Designer Barbara Fox and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna.
