2011-D United States 25-Cent Gettysburg/Pennsylvania National Park Quarter Coin (Brilliant Uncirculated)

In 2010, the United States Mint began issuing 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites as part of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program.

The 2011 Gettysburg National Military Park Quarter is the first of five quarter dollars to be issued by the US Mint in 2011 and honors the site in Pennsylvania. When released, it will also mark the sixth of a total of fifty-six strikes scheduled to be included as part of the US Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters Program® which debuted in 2010.

Strikes in the series honor different sites of national interest from around the United States and its territories. Additional 2011 releases in the program include the Glacier Quarter, the Olympic Quarter, the Vicksburg Quarter and the Chickasaw Quarter. This specific strike features a reverse design emblematic of Gettysburg National Military Park on its reverse.

The military park is located where the American Civil War Battle of Gettysburg was fought on July 1 - July 3, 1863. It is perhaps the best known Civil War battle owing to a couple of factors. First, it was the bloodiest battle of the war with a total of over 46,000 casualties and losses with over seven thousand of those killed as a direct result of their participation in the battle.

Second, it is acknowledged by many as the turning point of the war. Previous to this, the forces of the Confederate States of America seemed to have the upper hand, but this battle was the first of many Union victories which eventually resulted in the United States winning and a surrender of all of the Confederate forces.

Design

Obverse:
John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington (modified by William Cousins) is featured on the obverse. Also seen are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintmark.

Reverse:
The reverse was completed by United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) Master Designer Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by United States Mint Sculptor-Engraver Phebe Hemphill to show the 72nd Pennsylvania Infantry Monument found within the boundaries of Gettysburg National Military Park. Surrounding the design are the inscriptions of "GETTYSBURG," "PENNSYLVANIA," "2011" and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
