In 2010, the United States Mint began issuing 56 quarter-dollar coins featuring designs depicting national parks and other national sites as part of the United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Program.

Featuring probably the best internationally known park from the United States is the 2010 Grand Canyon National Park Quarter. As the fourth coin in the America the Beautiful Quarters series, it will be released into circulation by the U.S. Mint on September 20, 2010.

Located in the state of Arizona, the park is home to the vast canyon which at times reaches a width of up to 18 miles with a depth of over a mile. The walls of the canyon were cut over thousands of years by the erosive effects of the Colorado River which winds its way at the bottom of the natural wonder.

The area became a national park in 1919 after having first been designated a federal game preserve and then a monument.

Design

Obverse:
John Flanagan's portrait of George Washington (modified by William Cousins) is featured on the obverse. Also seen are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "QUARTER DOLLAR," "LIBERTY", "IN GOD WE TRUST" and the mintmark.

Reverse:
The reverse design features a view of the granaries above the Nankoweap Delta in Marble Canyon near the Colorado River. Inscriptions are GRAND CANYON, ARIZONA, 2010 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. It was both designed and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill.
