Powered Flight in Canada: The First 50 Years Coin Series

This 1992 Canadian $20 Curtiss HS-2L Sterling Silver Coin is part of the first ten-coin series commemorating the Powered Flight in Canada: The First 50 Years. Each coin commemorates an aviation hero and his achievements. These coins are composed of sterling silver and have a 24 karat gold covered cameo portrait of an aviation hero. This coin is the ninth coin in the series and features the Curtiss HS-2L.

Used by the military during World War I, the Curitss HS-2L later became an important bush aircraft in Canada. The country's first bush flying operation began in June 1919 when survey flights were conducted from Lac-a-la-Tortue, Quebec. The first Canadian civil Curtiss HS-2L, named La Vigilance, was delivered there by pilot Stuart Graham, acting navigator Madge Graham and engineer Walter Kahre who had flown from the former United States Naval Air Station at Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

The coin pictures a gold plated portrait of Stuart Graham, with the Curtis HS-2L in the background.
