1993 Canadian $20 Aviation Series I: Lockheed 14 Super Electra Sterling Silver Coin (Coin 8 of 10)

Powered Flight in Canada: The First 50 Years Coin Series

This 1992 Canadian $20 Lockheed 14 Super Electra Sterling Silver Coin is part of the first ten-coin series commemorating the Powered Flight in Canada: The First 50 Years. Each coin commemorates an aviation hero and his achievements. These coins are composed of sterling silver and have a 24 karat gold covered cameo portrait of an aviation hero. This coin is the eighth coin in the series and features the Lockheed 14 Super Electra.

The Lockheed 14 Super Electra was developed to provide passenger and cargo transportation service. Although of smaller capacity than its competitor, the Douglas DC-3, it had exceptional cruise performance. It was designed with special features such as Fowler flaps and leading edge slots to improve take-off and landing performance. The first prototype was flown in July 1937 and it subsequently led to the wartime development of the Hudson/Ventura bomber series.

The coin pictures a gold plated portrait of Zebulon Lewis Leigh, with the Lockheed 14 Super Electra in the background.
