1943-C Newfoundland 1-Cent Small Penny Coin Roll (Circulated)

Small Cents - George VI (1938 - 1947)

In 1937, the Newfoundland government reviewed converting to a small cent, similar to those used in Canada and the United States. The smaller coin was less expensive to produce and Newfoundlanders objected to the reverse design of the 1-cent large penny coin in which their provincial flower - the pitcher plant, was forced into an unnatural configuration.

"C" Mint Mark

During World War II, Newfoundland cents were coined at the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa rather than in England to avoid the risks of transatlantic shipping. The "C" mint mark is to the right of CENT on the reverse. In the 1940 and 1942 issues the "C" mint mark was omitted in error.

Obverse

Coin depicts the design of King George VI with the Latin inscription:
GEORGIVS VI DEI GRA:REX ET IND:IMP meaning "George VI, by the grace of God, the King and Emperor of India."

Reverse

Coin features a life-like rendition of the pitcher plant in bloom. This plant is native to Newfoundland, and is one of the insectivores of the plant kingdom. The large leaves are pitcher-like receptacles, the inner surfaces being covered with downward-sloping bristles. Insects are attracted onto their leaves by a sweet sticky syrup at the bottom and the bristles help prevent their escape.

Roll includes 50 coins of 1943-C Newfoundland 1 Cent (Small Penny) in circulated condition.
