1871 Prince Edward Island 1-Cent Large Penny Coin 5pc Lot (AG-G)

Large Cents - Victoria (1871)

In 1871, Prince Edward Island (PEI) adopted a decimal system with a dollar equal to the US gold dollar, as in Canada. Only the 1-cent denomination was ever issued prior to entry into Confederation in 1873. Because of heavy pressure of work on other coinage, the Royal Mint was forced to contract with the Heaton Mint in Birmingham, England (a private firm) to produce the Prince Edward Island cents.

This issue is distinctive in that it was struck at the Heaton Mint in Birmingham, but lacks the familiar 'H' mint mark and has English titles rather than Latin on the obverse.

Obverse

Coin depicts the design of Queen Victoria, based on a portrait model. Inscriptions as follows:
"VICTORIA QUEEN" and year of issue "1871".

Reverse

Adpated by L.C. Wyon form the Government seal of the island. The coin depicts a large oak tree, representing England, sheltering three oak saplings, representing the three countries of the island. Beneath the tree and saplings is the Latin inscription: PARVA SUB INGENTI meaning "The small beneath the great".

Lot includes 25 coins of 1871 Prince Edward Island 1 Cent Large in circulated condition.
